Five films across 42 years, one leading man, and a watch order with a small trap in it: the second film is a prequel. Here is every Indiana Jones film in release order, the story order for anyone who wants Indy’s life in sequence, and where the films stream in Canada, the US, the UK, Australia and New Zealand.
The short answer on streaming: Lucasfilm points viewers to Disney+ for the whole series. The first four films and the television series The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones arrived on the service on 31 May 2023, Lucasfilm said at the time, and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny followed. The first four were originally released in cinemas by Paramount Pictures, according to the AFI Catalog, a reminder that classic franchises rarely sit where they started (more on that in Who Owns Hollywood’s Classic Films?).
The films, in release order
1. Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). Directed by Steven Spielberg from a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan, story by George Lucas and Philip Kaufman. Harrison Ford is Indiana Jones, with Karen Allen as Marion Ravenwood, Paul Freeman as Belloq, John Rhys-Davies as Sallah and Denholm Elliott as Marcus Brody. Lucasfilm sets it in 1936, with Indy racing a rival and Nazi agents to the Ark of the Covenant. The AFI Catalog records four competitive Academy Awards (art direction, film editing, sound and visual effects) plus a Special Achievement Award for sound effects editing. The Library of Congress added it to the National Film Registry in 1999, the only film in the series there. Streaming menus now list it as Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, the title Lucasfilm uses.

2. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984). Spielberg again, written by Willard Huyck and Gloria Katz from a Lucas story. Kate Capshaw plays Willie Scott and Ke Huy Quan, billed as “introducing”, plays Short Round. The AFI Catalog notes the story opens in Shanghai in 1935, which makes it a prequel to Raiders. It won the Oscar for visual effects. The AFI record also notes it was rated PG in the US, and that the PG-13 rating was created soon after its release.
3. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989). Spielberg directs a Jeffrey Boam screenplay; Sean Connery joins as Professor Henry Jones, Indy’s father, with Alison Doody, Julian Glover and River Phoenix as Young Indy. The AFI Catalog places the main story in 1938, after a 1912 prologue in Utah. It won the Oscar for sound effects editing.
4. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008). After a 19-year gap, Ford and Karen Allen return under Spielberg. The Festival de Cannes screened it Out of Competition in 2008 and lists Shia LaBeouf as Mutt Williams, Cate Blanchett as Irina Spalko, Ray Winstone and John Hurt. Lucasfilm’s synopsis has Indy kidnapped by Soviet agents and heading to Peru, with alien visitors in the mix, so fans of 1950s science fiction will spot the influences.
5. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023). James Mangold takes over as director. Lucasfilm lists Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Antonio Banderas, John Rhys-Davies, Toby Jones, Boyd Holbrook, Ethann Isidore and Mads Mikkelsen alongside Ford. Cannes gave it a world premiere on 18 May 2023, and the festival’s announcement quoted Mangold calling it “a brand new and final Indiana Jones adventure.”
Release order or story order?
Release order is the simplest way in. It is the order audiences met the films, and Raiders is where Indy is introduced, even though Temple of Doom is set a year earlier.
For a chronological run, the verified dates give this sequence: The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles (the 1992 series, with Corey Carrier as the nine-year-old Indy and Sean Patrick Flanery as the teenager, per Lucasfilm), then Temple of Doom (1935), Raiders (1936), Last Crusade (1938, with its 1912 opening slotting earlier still), Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Dial of Destiny. On Disney+, the series streams under the title The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones.
A practical middle path: watch the five films in release order, and treat the series as an optional extra for completists.
What to watch first
Start with Raiders. It is the Registry title, the biggest Oscar winner of the original three, and the one the rest build on. If it lands, Last Crusade is the natural second film, since it shares Sallah and Marcus Brody and closes the original run. Go back for Temple of Doom, released as a PG just before the PG-13 rating arrived, then the two later films. For a similar run through a long franchise, see our guide to all 14 Star Trek films.
Behind the scenes, Lucasfilm credits Industrial Light & Magic with the visual effects on Raiders, one of the four Oscars the film took home.
