Trailer: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Cast, where to watch and more on the title page.
CBS Studios counts 14 Star Trek films in the franchise’s 60 years: 13 that played in cinemas and one, Star Trek: Section 31, made for Paramount+. For the anniversary in September, Paramount put newly restored 4K prints of the classic films into more than 750 US cinemas, paired with episodes of The Original Series making their theatrical debut, according to the studio’s 60th anniversary release. If that pass through town was missed, the whole run is streamable. Here is the order, what each film is about, and where to find them.
The original crew, 1979 to 1991
Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979). A mysterious entity threatens Earth, and Kirk returns to a refitted Enterprise to stop it, per StarTrek.com’s film page.
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982). Khan, “a genetically enhanced ‘super man’ from Kirk’s past,” returns to seek revenge on the now-Admiral Kirk, in StarTrek.com’s words.
Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984). Spock, who died saving the ship, is discovered alive on the Genesis planet where his body was buried, per StarTrek.com. A direct sequel; watch II first.
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986). The crew travels to 1980s Earth aboard a Klingon vessel to bring back a pair of whales that could avert a planetary disaster, per StarTrek.com.
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989). Spock’s half-brother Sybok hijacks the Enterprise and heads for the galaxy’s core in search of an entity he believes may be God, per StarTrek.com.
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991). After the Klingon moon Praxis explodes, Kirk escorts the Klingon chancellor to peace talks while conspirators on both sides try to derail them, per StarTrek.com. The send-off for the original cast.
The Next Generation films, 1994 to 2002
StarTrek.com’s 60th anniversary guide groups the next four as the Next Generation era: Star Trek Generations (1994), which hands the baton from Kirk to Picard; Star Trek: First Contact (1996), the Borg time-travel story; Star Trek: Insurrection (1998); and Star Trek Nemesis (2002), the last outing for Picard’s film crew until Star Trek: Picard reunited them on television.
The Kelvin timeline, 2009 to 2016
Star Trek (2009), Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) and Star Trek Beyond (2016) form what StarTrek.com calls the Kelvin Timeline trilogy, a rebooted continuity with a new cast as the original crew. They stand apart from the series and can be watched without any homework.
The streaming original
Star Trek: Section 31 (2025). Michelle Yeoh reprises Emperor Philippa Georgiou from Star Trek: Discovery in an original movie made for Paramount+, which StarTrek.com describes as a companion film to Discovery. It streams exclusively on Paramount+ in the US and in international markets where the service is available, per StarTrek.com.
A note on the count
Paramount’s own materials vary slightly. CBS Studios’ franchise boilerplate, as printed in the New York Comic Con release of 10 October 2026, says 14 films. StarTrek.com’s anniversary guide says Paramount+ carries “all 13 theatrical movies” plus Section 31. Both are right: 13 cinema releases plus one streaming original.
Where to watch
- United States: Paramount+ is “the streaming home of Star Trek,” per StarTrek.com, and its Star Trek Collection includes all 13 theatrical films and Section 31.
- Canada, UK, Australia: Section 31 streams on Paramount+ wherever the service operates, per StarTrek.com. The site does not break out the theatrical films by country; check the Paramount+ catalogue in your market, and our title pages in The Rerun for current listings.
- New Zealand: StarTrek.com lists no local home for the films. Our movies directory will update as listings change.
- In cinemas: Paramount’s 4K restorations played US cinemas from 4 to 8 September 2026, per the 60th anniversary release. No further theatrical dates have been announced.
