Joe Barton’s spy thriller arrived on Netflix in 2024 as a Christmas story with a body count, and it ended the way the best seasonal fare does: everyone home for the holidays, nobody quite safe. Season two lands Thursday, 5 November, and it picks up a year after what Netflix’s own promotion calls “the misadventures of last Christmas.” Here is what those misadventures were.

Helen Webb’s double life

Keira Knightley plays Helen Webb, the wife of the politician Wallace Webb (Andrew Buchan) and the mother of their children. She is also a spy. For years Helen has passed the secrets of her husband’s world to the Black Doves, a private network of spies and assassins run by the unflappable Reed (Sarah Lancashire).

The season opens with a death. Jason (Andrew Koji), the man Helen has been seeing behind Wallace’s back, is murdered. Reed, worried Helen is now a target, calls in an old friend to protect her: Sam Young (Ben Whishaw), a hitman and her longtime friend, whose loyalty to her runs deep.

A dead ambassador and a crime family

Jason’s murder turns out to be part of something larger. Ambassador Chen (Andy Cheung), a Chinese diplomat, is also dead, and the investigation into his death climbs to the highest levels of government. Wallace, it emerges, has been meeting a Chinese envoy in secret.

While Helen chases Jason’s killer into a dead end and has to fight for her life, Sam has problems of his own. He is threatened by his former employer, and his past resurfaces as he prepares to finish a job he started seven years earlier. Lenny (Kathryn Hunter), a fixture of the assassin world, keeps pressing him to kill Hector (Luther Ford), who would rather have Sam work for him. Sam also has a heart to protect: his partner, Michael (Omari Douglas).

Two wisecracking assassins, Eleanor (Gabrielle Creevy) and Williams (Ella Lily Hyland), and Chen’s daughter, Kai-Ming (Isabella Wei), are drawn into the chaos. Along the way the season reveals how far Reed’s reach goes: Dani (Agnes O’Casey), one of Wallace’s colleagues, and Marie (Molly Chesworth), the Webbs’ nanny, are both Black Doves.

The truth about Jason

As the danger closes in, Sam retreats to the only safe place he knows, and Reed delivers an ultimatum. Reed also hands Helen a hard drive containing the truth about Jason. He was an MI5 officer, and he had been investigating Helen over suspected leaks of government secrets. Helen throws the drive into the Thames rather than learn any more.

The conspiracy unravels in the finale, “In the Bleak Midwinter.” Chen was not assassinated in some grand plot. Trent Clark (Angus Cooper), the son of the London crime boss Alex Clark (Tracey Ullman), killed him by accident during a heated argument. To bury it, Trent ordered hits on everyone who might connect the dots, Jason among them.

The Christmas showdown

Armed with the evidence, Helen tracks down the Clarks and confronts Alex. When Helen levels her gun at Trent, it is Sam who pulls the trigger. He kills Trent and then Alex. In Netflix’s finale explainer, Barton frames the choice as an act of love: Sam spares Helen from killing a young man, and he does it knowing what it costs him. With the surviving Clarks out for revenge, any hope Sam had of leaving the trade is gone.

Where everyone was left

Helen and Wallace stay together, and the season closes on the family’s Christmas. Helen remains with the Black Doves, though her bond with Reed, maternal one moment and ruthless the next, could break either way. Sam and Michael part, after Hector offers Michael a choice between joining his world or leaving it for good. Sam ends the season in a diner with Lenny, still smelling of gunpowder and with Hector still alive. Eleanor, Williams and Kai-Ming survive and spend Christmas together.

Netflix’s finale explainer also flags the pressure ahead: Wallace is on course for the top job in British politics, which makes Helen’s secret life more dangerous than ever.

What Netflix has confirmed for season two

Netflix describes Helen as still betraying her nation’s secrets to the Black Doves and “walking a more treacherous line than ever,” with a mission that leads her and Sam “back to old friends and enemies.” Knightley, Whishaw, Lancashire, Buchan, Hunter, Hyland, Creevy, O’Casey and Chesworth return. New faces include Ambika Mod as Laila, Babou Ceesay as Mr. Conteh, Sam Riley as Patrick, Neve Campbell as Cecile Mason, Sylvia Hoeks as Katia Chernov, Goran Kostic as Alexi Chernov and Samuel Barnett as Jerry. Our story on the season two cast and premiere date has the details, and Netflix’s own Tudum hub carries the trailer.
