Every generation gets the Elizabeth Bennet it deserves, and this one has a trailer. Netflix has released the first full look at its six-part Pride and Prejudice, written by Dolly Alderton and directed by Euros Lyn, and it sets the tone early: Olivia Colman’s Mrs Bennet bellowing “Mr. Bennet!” while Rufus Sewell’s Mr Bennet does his level best not to hear her.

All six episodes arrive on Netflix on Thursday 3 December, a little under five weeks away, which puts Austen squarely in the run-up to Christmas.

What the trailer shows

The trailer is the first time the cast has been seen in motion. It moves between the noise of the Bennet household, the sisters talking over one another, and the slower, more charged business between Emma Corrin’s Lizzie and Jack Lowden’s Darcy. There are long views of Hertfordshire fields in wildflower, and brief appearances from Jamie Demetriou as Mr Collins, Daryl McCormack as Mr Bingley, Louis Partridge as Mr Wickham and Fiona Shaw as Lady Catherine de Bourgh.

Alderton, a bestselling author and screenwriter, has been candid about the weight of the job. Offered the adaptation, her first response was: “I absolutely cannot do this. This is everyone’s favorite book. It’s too much responsibility.” Corrin, who also takes her first executive producer credit here, frames the story’s appeal more simply: “Love is what the world needs right now. Everyone wants a bit of hope.”

The full Bennet household, and the rest

The cast runs deep. Freya Mavor plays Jane Bennet, Rhea Norwood is Lydia, and two newcomers make their screen debuts as the middle sisters: Hopey Parish as Mary and Hollie Avery as Kitty. Siena Kelly is Caroline Bingley, Anjana Vasan and Sebastian Armesto play the Gardiners, and Isabella Sermon is Georgiana Darcy. Rosie Cavaliero, Saffron Coomber, James Dryden, Justin Edwards, James Northcote and Eloise Webb complete the ensemble.

The series is made by Lookout Point, with Laura Lankester, Will Johnston and Louise Mutter executive producing alongside Alderton, Lyn and Corrin. Lisa Osborne, who produced Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light, is the producer. Lyn also directed Heartstopper for Netflix. Alderton first shared cast photos at the Jane Austen Festival in Bath.

What to watch first

Viewers who want a primer have options. Sewell is currently in The Diplomat, renewed for a fifth season, and Colman and Shaw need no introduction. For earlier versions of the novel, the 1995 BBC serial with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle and Joe Wright’s 2005 film are the two most viewers will know; check local listings for both, as their streaming rights move often. For something to watch in the meantime, our guide to November’s new arrivals on UK streaming has the month covered.
