Trailer: Black Doves. Cast, where to watch and more on the title page.
Bonfire Night falls on a Thursday this year, and so do the weekend’s two biggest streaming arrivals. Netflix releases its British spy thriller and its Arctic comedy on 5 November, Friday brings a new Lee Chang-dong film, a Colombian political drama and an Apple TV food series, and cinemas open a Godzilla sequel and a film about the making of Rocky. For the full Monday to Sunday picture, The Remote‘s What to Watch This Week Across the UK covers the wider week; this list is about Friday night to Sunday.
Start with Thursday’s drops
Black Doves, series two (Netflix, from Thursday 5 November). Keira Knightley’s Helen is back for a second series, still passing her country’s secrets to the Black Doves while her husband, Wallace (Andrew Buchan), prepares to become prime minister. Her handler, Reed (Sarah Lancashire), is caught up in a plot against her own position, and Helen and Sam (Ben Whishaw) reunite to find out who is behind it. Joe Barton created the series. New faces include Ambika Mod, Sam Riley, Neve Campbell and Sylvia Hoeks. The series is set in London, and The Remote has mapped where the series was filmed.
North of North, season two (Netflix, from Thursday 5 November). The Arctic comedy returns with eight half-hour episodes, light enough to sit alongside the spy thriller. Anna Lambe is back as Siaja, with Maika Harper, Jay Ryan and Mary Lynn Rajskub.

Possible Love (Netflix). Lee Chang-dong’s first film in eight years follows two married couples, one hit by job losses and one comfortably off, whose lives tangle when a documentary maker starts filming the laid-off workers. Jeon Do-yeon, Sul Kyung-gu, Zo In-sung and Cho Yeo-jeong star. It is the pick for anyone who wants a film rather than a series.
Under Siege (Netflix). An eight-episode Colombian limited series inspired by the events of 6 and 7 November 1985, when M-19 guerrillas seized the Palace of Justice in Bogotá and the army retook the building. It also follows victims’ families in a fight for justice that lasted more than two decades. The release date matches the anniversary to the day. Natalia Reyes leads the cast.
Awkwafina: The Unlikely Cook (Apple TV). Nora Lum, known as Awkwafina, sets out to revive her family’s Cantonese restaurant, Lum’s, in Flushing, New York, and admits at the start that she cannot cook. The eight-part docuseries takes her across the US to learn from chefs and restaurateurs, ending with an opening night where her grandmother is the last guest. It premieres worldwide.
WAR (Sky and NOW). George Kay’s legal drama about two rival London law firms continues its weekly run. Dominic West and Sienna Miller play the divorcing couple at its centre, with Archie Renaux as the young lawyer pulled into the fight. If you are behind, here is how to watch WAR.
In cinemas from Friday
Godzilla Minus Zero. Takashi Yamazaki returns as writer, director and visual effects supervisor for the follow-up to Godzilla Minus One, which won the Oscar for best visual effects. It opens in UK and Irish cinemas and IMAX on 6 November through Anime Limited, in Japanese with English subtitles, and is the first Toho-produced Godzilla film shot for IMAX. The plot has been kept under wraps.
I Play Rocky. Peter Farrelly writes and directs this account of how Rocky got made, with Anthony Ippolito as a young Sylvester Stallone refusing to sell his script unless he plays the lead. AnnaSophia Robb, Matt Dillon, Stephan James and Tracy Letts co-star. Entertainment Film releases it in UK and Irish cinemas on 6 November.
Saturday and Sunday
The Greatest (Prime Video). All eight episodes of Prime Video’s Muhammad Ali series arrived on Wednesday 4 November, which makes it the easiest binge of the weekend. Jaalen Best plays Cassius Clay and Muhammad Ali, with Omari Hardwick, Michael Ealy as Malcolm X and Giovanni Ribisi as Angelo Dundee. Ben Watkins created it.
Jordan & Sophie: A TOWIE Baby (ITV2 and ITVX, Sunday 8 November, 9pm). The first of two parts follows Jordan Brook and Sophie Kasaei as new parents to their son, Brody, after years of fertility struggles. Part two follows on Monday at 9pm.
Coming next week. If you have a Disney+ subscription, keep it: Rivals returns on Wednesday 11 November with three new episodes in the UK.
BBC iPlayer and Channel 4 had not published weekend highlights that The Remote could confirm at writing, so neither appears here.
