Every month, titles quietly drop off Netflix in Canada, and the first many viewers hear of it is the empty space in their Continue Watching row. Netflix does warn you before a show or film leaves, but it does so title by title, inside the app, rather than in a public list. Here is how to spot what is leaving, why it happens, and what Crave does and does not tell you.
Where Netflix shows the warning
According to Netflix’s Help Center, when a title is scheduled to leave in the coming month, Netflix displays a “Last day to watch on Netflix” message with the date. It appears in two places:
- On the title’s details page, the screen you see when you select a show or film before pressing play.
- At the top of the screen for a few seconds when you start playing it.
That gives you roughly a month’s notice, but only for titles you actually open. If something has been sitting in My List for a while, the simplest habit is to tap into it once a month and look for the date.
Why titles leave
Netflix’s help pages are direct about it: many of the shows and films on the service are licensed from studios, and some leave when those licences expire. When a licence is up for renewal, Netflix says it weighs whether the rights are still available, how popular the title is in a given region, and what it would cost to keep it.
Because licences are negotiated region by region, the Canadian catalogue is not the same as the American or British one. Netflix says licensed titles “may only be available in certain countries or for a limited time,” which is why a film can leave Netflix in Canada while staying on in the US, or the other way round.
Which titles are safest
Netflix says it produces, or buys exclusive rights to, many of its shows and films, and that these Netflix originals carry a red “N” or “NETFLIX” logo on their artwork, trailers or details pages. Netflix’s own help pages only discuss licence expiry for licensed titles, so the red logo is the best quick signal that a title is not on a licensing clock in the same way.
Licensed library titles, the studio films and older network series that fill out the catalogue, are the ones to watch for a “Last day” date.
Can you download it before it goes?
Downloads are not a workaround for a title that is leaving. Netflix says downloads “will expire after a period of time,” that not every title can be downloaded, and that some titles limit how many times they can be downloaded per year. Downloads also stay on the device that made them and are deleted if you cancel your account.
Netflix’s current limits, per its Help Center: ad-free plans allow up to 100 active downloads at a time per device, and the ad-supported plan is limited to 15 downloads per device per calendar month. Downloads work on Android phones and tablets, iPhone and iPad, Amazon Fire tablets and Chromebooks with the Google Play Store.
If a title has already gone
Netflix runs a title request form for shows and films that are not on the service. The Help Center also lists other reasons a title might not appear for you, including that it has not been released in Canada yet, that it is blocked by a profile’s maturity settings, or that it is not available in your profile’s language. If you use a VPN, Netflix says you may only see titles that are available globally.
And Crave?
Crave publishes what is arriving, not what is leaving. Bell Media releases a monthly overview of new programming on Crave, including HBO Originals and new films, but the October 2026 edition has no section for departures. If a Crave title matters to you, the practical move is to watch it while it is there and to check the title’s page in the app.
Quick checklist
- Open the details page of anything on your list once a month and look for “Last day to watch on Netflix.”
- Prioritize licensed library titles over Netflix originals.
- Do not rely on downloads to keep a title after it leaves.
- Use Netflix’s title request form for anything already gone.
- For Crave, watch Bell Media’s monthly overview for what is new, and do not assume a library film will stay.
