Teletubbies

Four Teletubbies, Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa and Po, live in a grassy dome in a bright landscape watched over by a baby faced sun. They play, tumble, speak in toddler babble and watch short films of real children on the screens on their tummies, with a talking vacuum cleaner, Noo-Noo, tidying up behind them.

Our take

They play, tumble, speak in toddler babble and watch short films of real children on the screens on their tummies, with a talking vacuum cleaner, Noo-Noo, tidying up behind them.

Why watch Built around how toddlers actually watch television, with repetition, gentle rituals and a slow pace, it became a global hit and won multiple BAFTAs. Adults found it surreal, which is part of its enduring appeal. Best for very young children, and for parents who want to share a late 1990s phenomenon with a new generation.

What to know

Anne Wood and Andrew Davenport created Teletubbies for the BBC, through Wood’s company Ragdoll Productions. The original series began in 1997 and ran until 2001. Each episode follows set rituals: the Voice Trumpets rising from the grass, a magical event, a film on one Teletubby’s tummy and a reluctant goodbye as the sun sets. John Simmit played Dipsy, Nikky Smedley Laa-Laa and Pui Fan Lee Po, while Tinky Winky was voiced by Mark Heenehan.

The show’s success extended far beyond the screen. A single based on the theme reached number one in the UK in December 1997, selling more than a million copies, and merchandise sales passed £1 billion by October 2000. A rebooted series ran on CBeebies and Nick Jr. from 2015, with 120 episodes, and a new version arrived on Netflix in 2022.

Where to start

For toddlers, any episode works, since repetition is the point. The original series is the version most parents remember.
