Patrick Stewart in I, Claudius
Patrick Stewart plays Sejanus, the ruthless commander of the Praetorian Guard who becomes the most powerful man in Rome under the emperor Tiberius, in the BBC’s 1976 drama. Adapted by Jack Pulman from Robert Graves’s novels, the 13-part series follows the Julio-Claudian emperors through the eyes of Claudius, played by Derek Jacobi, with Siân Phillips as Livia, Brian Blessed as Augustus and John Hurt as Caligula. Stewart, then best known for his stage work with the Royal Shakespeare Company, wore a wig for the part. Sejanus plots his way to the top and falls just as quickly, and Stewart plays both halves with a cold charm.
The BBC’s 1976 drama tells the history of Rome’s first emperors through the eyes of Claudius, played by Derek Jacobi. Patrick Stewart plays Sejanus, the ambitious commander of the Praetorian Guard.
