Our take
The story of Lady Jane Grey, the teenager who was queen of England for nine days in 1553, with Helena Bonham Carter in her first starring film role and Cary Elwes as her husband, Guilford Dudley.
Why watch A lavish, sad historical drama about one of the shortest reigns in English history, with Helena Bonham Carter in the role that launched her film career. It is worth seeing for the Tudor politics and for a young Cary Elwes before The Princess Bride.

Patrick Stewart in Lady Jane
Patrick Stewart plays Henry Grey, Duke of Suffolk, Jane’s ambitious father, whose scheming helps put his daughter on the throne and then on the scaffold. The film was directed by Trevor Nunn, who had led the Royal Shakespeare Company during Stewart’s years with it, and it is one of a handful of 1980s screen roles that came just before Star Trek: The Next Generation made him famous.
