Twenty-five years after Harry first boarded the Hogwarts Express on screen, the story is about to start again. HBO’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, the first season of a series built book by book, debuts at Christmas 2026. Before it does, the film saga is worth a rewatch, or a first watch, and the order matters more than it looks.
Warner Bros. released 11 films in the Wizarding World between 2001 and 2022: eight Harry Potter films and three Fantastic Beasts films. Below is every one in release order, followed by the story order and where each one streams in Canada, the US, the UK, Australia and New Zealand.
The Harry Potter films
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001)
Released on 16 November 2001 (as Sorcerer’s Stone in North America), the first film adapts J.K. Rowling’s first novel. On his 11th birthday, Harry learns that his parents were wizards and that he has magic of his own. It earned three Oscar nominations.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)
A year later, on 15 November 2002, Harry, Ron and Hermione return for their second year at Hogwarts. Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson investigate a dark force attacking students inside the castle.
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)
Released on 4 June 2004, the third film finds the trio as teenagers. Sirius Black has escaped the wizard prison of Azkaban, and he appears to be coming for Harry.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)
Harry’s name comes out of the Goblet of Fire, entering him in the Triwizard Tournament, a dangerous contest between three schools, though he never put it in. The film opened on 18 November 2005.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007)
Voldemort is back, and the Ministry of Magic is determined to deny it. Released on 11 July 2007, it installs Dolores Umbridge as the Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher while a resistance begins to form.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)
With Voldemort’s grip tightening on both worlds and Hogwarts no longer safe, Dumbledore starts preparing Harry for what is coming. It opened on 15 July 2009.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 (2010)
The final chapter was split across two films, with Voldemort now close to total control. Part 1 was released on 19 November 2010.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (2011)
The second half of the final chapter closes Harry’s story. Part 2 was released on 15 July 2011, almost exactly a decade after the first film.
The Fantastic Beasts films
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016)
The prequel series opened on 18 November 2016, decades before Harry’s time. In 1926 New York, something mysterious is leaving a trail of destruction, and it threatens to expose wizards to non-magical Americans who would wipe them out. Eddie Redmayne’s magizoologist Newt Scamander is at its centre.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018)
The dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald, captured at the end of the first film with Newt’s help, escapes and begins gathering followers to put pure-blood wizards in power. Released on 16 November 2018.
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022)
Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) cannot stop Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen) alone, so he sends Newt (Eddie Redmayne) at the head of a team of wizards, witches and one Muggle baker. It opened on 15 April 2022, the most recent Wizarding World film.
Release order vs story order
For a first-time viewer, release order is the way in: the Harry Potter films introduce the world, and the Fantastic Beasts films reward knowing who Dumbledore and Grindelwald become.
For a chronological rewatch, the timeline runs:
- Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
- Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
- Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore
- to 11. The eight Harry Potter films, Philosopher’s Stone to Deathly Hallows Part 2
