Narnia is going back to the cinema, and the way in for anyone catching up runs through one streaming service. Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew opens in IMAX on Friday 12 February 2027, with IMAX-only sneak previews from Wednesday 10 February, and arrives on Netflix on Friday 2 April 2027. Netflix calls the cinema run “a truly global cinematic event.”

Until then, the three Narnia features made between 2005 and 2010 sit together on Disney+ in all four of our markets: Canada, the US, the UK and Australia. Here is the order, what each film covers, and how the new one fits.

Release order or story order?

C. S. Lewis wrote seven Narnia books, which Netflix says have sold more than 120 million copies in 70 countries. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was published first, in 1950. The Magician’s Nephew, from 1955, goes further back: it shows how the comings and goings between our world and Narnia first began, which makes it the origin story for everything the wardrobe sets in motion. Gerwig’s film is the first screen adaptation of that novel.

That leaves two ways to watch. Story order puts The Magician’s Nephew first, but it is months away. Release order is the practical route for anyone starting this weekend, and it is the one below.

1. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)

Andrew Adamson directs the first film. Four siblings find a wardrobe that opens onto Narnia, a land the White Witch has locked in endless winter, and join the lion Aslan in the fight to break her hold. The cast includes Georgie Henley, Skandar Keynes, William Moseley, Anna Popplewell, Tilda Swinton and James McAvoy. It runs two hours and 29 minutes. Disney+ rates it PG in Canada, the US and Australia, and 12+ in the UK.

2. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008)

Adamson returns for the sequel. The Pevensie children go back to Narnia a year after their first visit and find that more than 1,300 years have passed there and an evil king now rules; with Aslan, they help free Prince Caspian from exile and restore peace. Ben Barnes and Peter Dinklage join the returning young cast. At two hours and 35 minutes it is the longest of the three. Disney+ rates it PG in Canada and the US, 12+ in the UK and M in Australia.

3. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010)

Michael Apted takes over the director’s chair. Lucy, Edmund and their cousin cross into Narnia through a painting and sail with King Caspian to help Narnian lords banished by a usurper, meeting merfolk, dragons and dwarves along the way. Will Poulter joins Henley, Keynes and Barnes, and Swinton appears again. It is the shortest of the three, at one hour and 53 minutes. Disney+ rates it PG in Canada, the US and Australia, and 9+ in the UK.

4. Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew (2027)

Gerwig wrote the screenplay and directs. The cast is David McKenna, Beatrice Campbell, Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, Ciarán Hinds, Daniel Craig, Meryl Streep, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Denise Gough and Susan Wokoma; Netflix has not yet published who plays whom. Douglas Gresham and Melvin Adams are executive producers for the C. S. Lewis Estate. Netflix’s tagline sets up the link to the earlier films: “Long before the wardrobe, there was a lion.”

Where to start

Our pick: watch the three Disney+ films in release order over a weekend or two, then go into February knowing where the wardrobe and Aslan are headed. Viewers who prefer to meet Narnia from its first day can hold the trilogy until after The Magician’s Nephew and watch everything in story order next spring.

For families, the age ratings above are the quickest guide, and they differ by market: Prince Caspian carries the strictest labels of the three.

The pattern will be familiar from our guides to streaming Harry Potter and every Mission: Impossible film, and from the live-action Moana: a studio library on one service, a new title on its way. For why a February cinema release will not reach Netflix until April, see our explainer on how long a cinema release takes to reach streaming.
