The British Independent Film Awards have spent the past fortnight releasing longlists, one category at a time. Taken together, they map the British independent films in contention this awards season, and double as a watchlist for anyone who missed them in cinemas or at festivals. The final five nominees in each category will be announced on Tuesday 3 November, and winners revealed at the BIFA ceremony at the Roundhouse in London on Sunday 6 December.

Breakthrough Performance

The Netflix-sponsored Breakthrough Performance longlist, published on 14 October, names 14 British performers. Extra Geography and Animol each have two: Galaxie Clear and Marni Duggan for the former, Sekou Diaby and Tut Nyuot for the latter. Florence Hunt is longlisted for Queen at Sea, and Laurie Kynaston for Lady. The rest of the list is Olive Gray (Surviving Earth), Joshua Griffin (Masc), Leisa Gwenllian (Effi o Blaenau), Jonathan Jules (Florid), Chirag Benedict Lobo (The Cycle of Love), Séamus McLean Ross (California Schemin’), Daniel Quinn-Toye (Sunny Dancer) and Luke Tittensor (Straight Circle).

New talent

The new talent longlists, published on 15 October, cover 33 features (21 fiction, 12 documentary) and 51 debut writers, directors and producers. The Douglas Hickox Award for Best Debut Director, sponsored by BBC Film, has 14 names, including Ashley Walters for Animol, Grant Gee for Everybody Digs Bill Evans, Beatrice Gibson for At Night and Molly Manners for Extra Geography. The Film4-sponsored Best Debut Screenwriter list includes Miriam Battye (Extra Geography), Ciarán McMenamin (Skintown) and Elaine Gracie and Archie Thomson (California Schemin’).

Documentary and international

The Best Feature Documentary longlist has 14 films, among them Jeanie Finlay’s All Rivers Spill Their Stories to the Sea, Black Is Beautiful: The Kwame Brathwaite Story, Everybody to Kenmure Street, Maverick: The Epic Adventures of David Lean, Molly vs the Machines and the mountaineering film The Last First: Winter K2.

The Best International Independent Film longlist runs to 16 titles and reads like a festival-season roll call: Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s All of a Sudden, Lukas Dhont’s Coward, Paweł Pawlikowski’s Fatherland, Cristian Mungiu’s Fjord, Andrey Zvyagintsev’s Minotaur, Lee Chang-dong’s Possible Love, Ildikó Enyedi’s Silent Friend and Jane Schoenbrun’s Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma. Sophy Romvari’s Blue Heron and Jordan Firstman’s Club Kid are also on it.

The Raindance Maverick Award

The Raindance Maverick longlist, published on 19 October, recognises low-budget work: fiction features under £1.5 million and documentaries under £500,000. Its 15 films include Act 3, Chatlines, Misper, Sunlight and Tomorrow’s Too Late. BIFA says more than half of the titles are debut features. Raindance founder Elliot Grove said the award aims to “champion filmmakers with the nerve to follow their own instincts.”

BIFA also published a 15-strong Cinema of the Year longlist on 13 October, chosen from nearly 50,000 public votes.
