Why watch It is light, glamorous 1970s mystery television, closer to the Thin Man films than to a gritty procedural, and the easy chemistry between Hudson and Saint James carries it. Each episode runs at feature length, so the cases have room to breathe. It suits fans of Columbo and McCloud, its companions in rotation, and anyone after unhurried vintage comfort viewing.
What to know
McMillan & Wife aired on NBC from 17 September 1971 to 24 April 1977 as part of Universal Television’s NBC Mystery Movie, rotating with Columbo and McCloud. It began on Wednesday nights and moved to Sundays in its second season. Over six seasons it produced 40 episodes.
The final season was retooled and retitled simply McMillan. Saint James left after contract talks failed, and Sally was written out in a plane crash; Walker departed for her own sitcom. Martha Raye joined as Mildred’s sister Agatha, and Richard Gilliland arrived as Sgt. DiMaggio, who always added “no relation”. The pilot’s interiors were shot in Hudson’s own house.
