Trailer: Zootopia 2. Cast, where to watch and more on the title page.
The long weekend is the rare stretch when everyone is home and someone has to pick a movie. Thanksgiving falls on Monday 12 Oct, and the Canadian streamers have stocked up: Disney+ has its newest animated features, Crave added a run of family comedies on 9 Oct, Prime Video has the Despicable Me films, and CBC Gem has new, free kids’ specials. Every title below was checked against the platform’s own Canadian page or Canadian release list, with ratings as those pages show them.
Disney+
The deepest shelf for families, and the most recent releases. Each of these appears on its Disney+ Canada title page.
- Zootopia 2 (PG, 2025, 1 h 53 min). Rookie cops Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde go undercover in unfamiliar parts of the city after Gary De’Snake arrives in town, and their partnership is tested.
- Elio (PG, 2025, 1 h 42 min). Pixar’s story of a space-obsessed kid who is beamed up to the Communiverse, an interplanetary organization, and mistaken for Earth’s leader.
- Moana 2 (PG, 2024, 1 h 43 min). After a call from her ancestors, Moana sails with Maui into the far seas of Oceania.
- Lilo & Stitch (PG, 2025, 1 h 51 min). The live-action remake, which Disney describes as the story of a Hawaiian girl and the alien who helps mend her broken family.
- Hocus Pocus 2 (PG, 2022, 1 h 47 min). An early start on Halloween: 29 years after the Black Flame Candle is lit, the Sanderson sisters return to Salem, and three high-school students have to stop them before dawn.
Best for: a multi-generation crowd. Zootopia 2 and Moana 2 are sequels, so younger viewers who missed the originals can find both first films on the same service.
Crave
Crave’s October additions include a cluster of family films that landed on Friday 9 Oct, just ahead of the long weekend, according to Bell Media‘s monthly overview.
- Trolls Band Together (from 9 Oct). The third Trolls film.
- UglyDolls (from 9 Oct). The animated musical based on the plush toys.
- The Addams Family (1991) and Addams Family Values (from 9 Oct). The live-action pair.
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990) (from 16 Oct). Arrives the Friday after the holiday.
- Goosebumps, seasons 1 to 4 (from 21 Oct). Lined up for the run-up to Halloween.
Best for: families with older kids who want something a little spookier than a cartoon.
Prime Video
Amazon Canada’s October list added a handful of family titles on 1 Oct.
- Despicable Me, Despicable Me 2 and Despicable Me 3. Gru and the Minions, as a three-film marathon.
- Clifford. The big red dog.
- Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The 1968 musical about a flying car.
- Peppa Pig, seasons 1 and 2 (from Thu 15 Oct). For the youngest viewers once the holiday is over.
Best for: a Despicable Me triple bill on a rainy afternoon.
CBC Gem
Free with a CBC Gem sign-in, and the most Canadian option on the list.
- Miraculous World specials (from Sat 10 Oct). CBC says four movies follow Ladybug, Cat Noir, Marinette and Adrien to New York, Paris, Shanghai and Tokyo as they make allies and face new opponents. They start the first day of the long weekend.
- CBC Kids Reads 2026 (from Mon 12 Oct). Five short episodes in which puppet hosts Gary the Unicorn and Cottonball pair with kid co-hosts to read nominated picture books, under the theme “Stories that Spark Joy”. The first lands on Thanksgiving Monday; the finale is 19 Oct.
- Super Why’s Comic Book Adventures (from Wed 14 Oct). A literacy series for preschool and kindergarten viewers, with Power Paige joining the Super Readers in a comic-book world.
- Molly of Denali, season 2 (streaming since 30 Sept). The animated series about 10-year-old Molly Mabray, an Indigenous girl who helps run her family’s general store in Qyah, Alaska.
Best for: families who do not want another subscription.
Netflix
Netflix‘s own Canadian “New on Netflix” list adds two family-friendly titles in the days before the long weekend.
- Unicorn Academy: Secrets Revealed (from 8 Oct). A new chapter of the animated Unicorn Academy franchise.
- Is It Cake? Halloween, season 2 (from 9 Oct). Six cake artists make Halloween-themed treats designed to fool the judges.
Netflix’s wider library of family films varies by country, so check the app for anything not on this list.
