Rita Hayworth (17 October 1918 to 14 May 1987) was an American actor and dancer, born Margarita Carmen Cansino in New York City, who became one of Columbia Pictures' biggest stars of the 1940s. A trained dancer from a family of performers, she moved from supporting parts to leading roles in Only Angels Have Wings (1939) and Blood and Sand (1941), danced with Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly in musicals, and defined the femme fatale as the title character in Gilda (1946). She worked into the 1970s.
Rita Hayworth appears in 7 films in The Rerun, from 1945 to 1958. Most of that work is in romance, crime and musical. Frequent collaborators in The Rerun: Glenn Ford (3), Charles Vidor (2), Philip Van Zandt (2), Orson Welles (2), George Macready (2).
Known for
- Gilda (1946). Her first major dramatic role, opposite Glenn Ford.
- The Lady from Shanghai (1947).
- The Loves of Carmen (1948). A 1948 film directed by Charles Vidor, who also directed Gilda.
- Affair in Trinidad (1952). A 1952 film credit after her 1940s peak.
- Separate Tables (1958). A late-1950s film credit from the later part of her career.
Career
Hayworth’s rise came in the early 1940s. After Only Angels Have Wings she played in The Strawberry Blonde and Blood and Sand (both 1941), then partnered Astaire in You’ll Never Get Rich (1941) and You Were Never Lovelier (1942) and starred with Kelly in Cover Girl (1944). Tonight and Every Night (1945) set a wartime musical in a London theatre that never closed during the Blitz.
Gilda became her defining film, and her “Put the Blame on Mame” number is still the image most associated with her. Orson Welles cast her as the enigmatic Elsa in The Lady from Shanghai (1948), and she starred in The Loves of Carmen the same year. Later highlights include Affair in Trinidad (1952), reuniting her with Glenn Ford, Pal Joey (1957) and the ensemble drama Separate Tables (1958).
