John C. McGinley
American actor
John C. McGinley is an American actor, born in Greenwich Village, New York, on 3 August 1959. He trained at NYU's Graduate Acting Program and broke into film with Oliver Stone, playing Sergeant Red O'Neill in Platoon (1986). He became a reliable supporting presence in 1990s studio films, from Point Break and The Rock to Office Space, before taking his best known role: the acerbic Dr. Perry Cox in Scrubs (2001 to 2010).

McGinley worked with Stone again on Wall Street (1987) and played the FBI man Ben Harp in Point Break (1991). The decade brought a run of sharp supporting parts: a SWAT leader in David Fincher’s Se7en (1995), Captain Hendrix in The Rock (1996), the serial killer Edgler Vess in the miniseries Intensity (1997) and the efficiency consultant Bob Slydell in Office Space (1999).
Scrubs made him a television star. As Dr. Cox, the mentor who teaches through ridicule, he was a series regular for nine seasons. He later played the broadcaster Red Barber in 42 (2013) and starred in IFC’s horror comedy Stan Against Evil (2016 to 2018).
