Jim Belushi

American actor

Jim Belushi, born on 15 June 1954 in Wheaton, Illinois, is an American actor, comedian and musician. Like his older brother John, he came up through Chicago's Second City, joined Saturday Night Live (1983 to 1985) and then built a busy film career in the late 1980s, from Salvador and About Last Night to the action comedies Red Heat and K-9. A guest turn on ER in 2001 led to his longest-running role, the title character in the ABC sitcom According to Jim (2001 to 2009). He also performs music, recording and touring with Dan Aykroyd.

Jim Belushi appears in 11 films in The Rerun, from 1983 to 2025. Most of that work is in comedy, drama and action. Frequent collaborators in The Rerun: Arnold Schwarzenegger (3), Frank Oz (2).

Known for

  • According to Jim (2001). His television role, which ran from 2001 to 2009.
  • Red Heat (1988).
  • Trading Places (1983).

Career

Belushi’s first significant screen part was in Michael Mann’s Thief (1981), and he turned up in a gorilla suit in Trading Places (1983) before his Saturday Night Live stint. Supporting roles in 1986, among them Oliver Stone’s Salvador, About Last Night and Little Shop of Horrors, opened the door to leads: the Chicago cop paired with Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Soviet detective in Red Heat, the narcotics officer with a German shepherd partner in K-9, and Taking Care of Business.

Television became his home from 2001, when According to Jim began an eight-season run. Later work includes the CBS legal drama The Defenders, Broadway in Born Yesterday (2011), Amazon’s Good Girls Revolt, Woody Allen’s Wonder Wheel and Roman Polanski’s The Ghost Writer. Discovery’s Growing Belushi followed his Oregon cannabis farm.

Where to start

  • Red Heat (1988): Walter Hill’s buddy-cop picture, with Belushi as the wisecracking half.
  • Wag the Dog (1997): a smaller part in a sharp political satire.
  • Salvador (1986): the supporting turn that showed he could do more than comedy.
