Hong Kong actor and martial artist (born 1954)

Jackie Chan, born Chan Kong-sang in Hong Kong on 7 April 1954, is a martial artist, actor and filmmaker known for slapstick, acrobatic fight scenes and dangerous stunts he usually performs himself. He trained at the China Drama Academy, entered Hong Kong cinema as a stuntman, and became a star with Snake in the Eagle's Shadow and Drunken Master in 1978. Rumble in the Bronx brought him to North American audiences and Rush Hour made him a Hollywood star. He received an honorary Academy Award in 2016.

Career

The 1978 double of Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow and Drunken Master established the template: kung fu played for laughs, with real physical risk. Through the 1980s he refined it as a director and star in Project A (1983) and Police Story (1985), whose stunt sequences remain reference points for action filmmakers. His films have grossed over US$6 billion worldwide.

Rumble in the Bronx (1995) opened the North American market, and Rush Hour (1998), opposite Chris Tucker, made him a Hollywood lead, with two sequels. He played the mentor in the 2010 remake of The Karate Kid and voiced Monkey in the Kung Fu Panda films. He holds stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Hong Kong’s Avenue of Stars, and two Guinness World Records, one for most stunts by a living actor.

Where to start

  • Drunken Master (1978): the comic kung fu style fully formed.
  • Rush Hour (1998): the buddy comedy that made him a Hollywood star.
  • The Karate Kid (2010): a rare quiet, dramatic turn as a grieving teacher.

Also essential: Police Story (1985).
