Carrie Snodgress

American actress (1945-2004)

Carrie Snodgress was an American actress, born on 27 October 1945 in Barrington, Illinois, who died in Los Angeles on 1 April 2004, aged 58. After small television parts in 1969, she starred as the put-upon Tina Balser in Diary of a Mad Housewife (1970), her first lead, which brought an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, a BAFTA nomination and two Golden Globes. She stepped away from acting soon afterwards, returned with The Fury in 1978, and worked steadily as a character actress for the next quarter-century.

Carrie Snodgress appears in 3 films in The Rerun, from 1969 to 1998. Most of that work is in drama, crime and mystery. Frequent collaborators in The Rerun: Clint Eastwood (2), Dennis Hopper (2).

Known for

  • Diary of a Mad Housewife (1970). Her best-remembered role, nominated for an Oscar and winning two Golden Globes.
  • Pale Rider (1985). A later film role from 1985.
  • Wild Things (1998). A late-career film credit from 1998.

Career

Snodgress arrived fully formed. Frank Perry’s Diary of a Mad Housewife (1970), adapted by Eleanor Perry from Sue Kaufman’s novel, paired her with Richard Benjamin and Frank Langella, and her dry, wounded Tina earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actress plus Golden Globes for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical and New Star of the Year. The same year she played Janice Angstrom in Rabbit, Run. Then, at the peak of her heat, she stepped away until 1978.

Brian De Palma’s The Fury (1978) brought her back, and the second half of her career was built on supporting work: Clint Eastwood’s Pale Rider (1985), the Charles Bronson thriller Murphy’s Law (1986), Blue Sky (1994) and the Florida noir Wild Things (1998). Her final film was the HBO drama Iron Jawed Angels (2004).

Where to start

  • Diary of a Mad Housewife (1970): the performance that defined her, sharp and funny about a marriage going sour.
  • Pale Rider (1985): as Sarah Wheeler, she gives Eastwood’s mythic western its human stakes.
  • Wild Things (1998): a late, flinty supporting turn in a deliriously twisty thriller.
