Billie Piper

British actress and singer (born 1982)

Billie Piper is an English actress and former pop singer, born on 22 September 1982 in Swindon. At 15 she became the youngest female artist to debut at number one on the UK Singles Chart with "Because We Want To", and scored two more number ones before leaving music in 2003. She then remade herself as an actor, first as Rose Tyler, companion to the Doctor, in the BBC revival of Doctor Who. Later roles include Secret Diary of a Call Girl, Penny Dreadful, Collateral and I Hate Suzie, which she co-created, and she won an Olivier Award for Yerma.

Billie Piper appears in 2 films and 1 TV series in The Rerun, from 1996 to 2026. Most of that work is in biography, drama and adventure. Frequent collaborators in The Rerun: Alan Parker (2).

  • Doctor Who (2005), Rose Tyler. She played the Doctor’s companion as a regular in 2005 and 2006, returning as a guest.

Career

Piper trained at the Sylvia Young Theatre School and was an extra in Evita (1996) before her pop career took off with the album Honey to the B. Her screen career turned on Doctor Who: as Rose Tyler she was a regular in 2005 and 2006, the first two series of the revival, and returned in 2008, 2010 and for the 50th anniversary special in 2013. She then led Secret Diary of a Call Girl (2007 to 2011) and played Brona Croft in Showtime’s gothic horror Penny Dreadful (2014 to 2016).

Her stage work brought her strongest notices: Yerma won her the 2017 Olivier Award for Best Actress and an Evening Standard award. A BAFTA nomination followed for Collateral (2018), and she co-created and starred in Sky Atlantic’s I Hate Suzie (2020 to 2022), earning two more BAFTA nominations. In 2025 she joined Netflix’s Wednesday as Isadora Capri.
