British filmmaker

Gareth Edwards is an English filmmaker, born in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, in 1975 to Welsh parents, who moved from television visual effects to directing some of the largest franchises in cinema. He studied film at the Surrey Institute of Art & Design and built a career creating digital effects for documentary dramas. His micro-budget debut Monsters (2010) won him the British Independent Film Award for Best Director, and led to Godzilla (2014), Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016), The Creator (2023) and Jurassic World Rebirth (2025).

Career

Edwards began in television visual effects, creating 250 effects shots for Heroes and Villains. On Monsters he was writer, director, cinematographer and effects artist, shooting with off-the-shelf equipment and a crew of five beyond the two leads. The film won three British Independent Film Awards.

The leap was immediate. Warner Bros. and Legendary hired him in 2011 for Godzilla, and Lucasfilm gave him Rogue One, the first standalone Star Wars film, released on 16 December 2016. He returned to original science fiction with The Creator (2023), starring John David Washington, then stepped in for Universal on Jurassic World Rebirth, released on 2 July 2025.
