The first full weekend of November splits neatly in two. At the cinema, it belongs to grown-up spy comedy and a very large lizard. At home, the most interesting Friday drops are the quieter ones: a Lee Chang-dong film on Netflix, a run of British and Australian imports on CBC Gem, and a comedian who cannot cook trying to save her family’s restaurant.

The weekday heavyweights, from spy thrillers to golf, are covered in Canada’s week on screen and the US watchlist. This list sticks to what lands from Friday 6 to Sunday 8 November.

In theatres, Friday 6 November

Wild Horse Nine (Searchlight Pictures, Canada and US). Martin McDonagh’s new film sends two CIA agents, played by John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell, from Santiago to Easter Island in 1973, just before the Chilean coup, where the trip goes off course as their pasts catch up with them. Steve Buscemi, Mariana di Girolamo and Ailín Salas co-star, with Tom Waits and Parker Posey. It runs 116 minutes and is rated 14A in Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. It is the McDonagh title from our fall theatrical slate, now arriving on schedule.

Godzilla Minus Zero (GKIDS and Toho, North America). Takashi Yamazaki’s follow-up to Godzilla Minus One goes wide on Friday in standard and premium formats, after IMAX early-access screenings on Tuesday 3 November. Set in 1949, two years after the last film, it follows the Shikishima family into a new disaster just as Japan is finding its feet. GKIDS bills it as the first Japanese production filmed for IMAX, so that is the format to book if the choice is open.

Heated Rivalry (Cineplex in Canada, Regal in the US). The Crave hockey romance starts a run of marathon screenings at Cineplex from Friday, covering all six episodes of season one on select dates. Check Cineplex for participating theatres before setting out.

Streaming, Friday 6 November

Possible Love (Netflix, Canada and US). The new film from Lee Chang-dong, the South Korean director of Burning, lands on Netflix on Friday. The Remote has the background on Possible Love, from cast to story, for anyone deciding whether to make it the Friday-night pick.

Under Siege (Netflix, Canada and US). An eight-episode Colombian drama inspired by the M-19 guerrilla siege of the Palace of Justice in Bogotá on 6 and 7 November 1985, and the army’s retaking of the building. It is fiction built on the public record, released on the 41st anniversary of the siege. Natalia Reyes, Luna Baxter and Mariana Gómez lead; Jayro Bustamante is among the directors.

Unprotected: Murder in Galicia (Netflix, Canada and US). A Spanish true-crime documentary by Jorge Laplace about Isabel Fuentes, who survived a 2015 home invasion in Verín only to be murdered 37 days later in the hospital room where she was recovering. Netflix’s scripted Murder in Galicia, based on the same case, follows one week later, so this is the place to start.

Awkwafina: The Unlikely Cook (Apple TV, Canada and US). An eight-part docuseries in which Nora Lum, who freely admits she cannot cook, sets out to revive Lum’s, her family’s Cantonese restaurant in Flushing, New York. The road trip runs through the Culinary Institute of America, Texas barbecue with Jimmy O. Yang and lessons from Roy Choi and Martin Yan, and ends on opening night with her grandmother as the toughest diner in the room. It comes from Twofour, the company behind The Reluctant Traveler With Eugene Levy.

CBC Gem’s Friday batch (Canada). Gem front-loads its month on 6 November, and the pick is Ann Droid, a six-part British comedy getting its exclusive Canadian premiere: a widow reluctantly accepts a humanoid care robot from her son, and chaos follows. The same day brings all three seasons of Scott Ryan’s Australian crime comedy Mr Inbetween, about a hit man juggling jobs and fatherhood, which is the deeper binge. Also new: Château DIY season nine, the chef-and-actor seafood tour Ed and Ryu: Mad About Seafood, Mathieu Denis’s Quebec drama Gagne ton ciel (The Cost of Heaven), and Adam McKay’s The Big Short, which won the Oscar for best adapted screenplay. For the rest of Gem’s month, see November’s full Canadian streaming list.

Wolves Up Close with Bertie Gregory (Disney+ and Hulu, US). The National Geographic filmmaker behind Animals Up Close turns his camera on wolves, premiering Friday on both services in the US. Canadian timing has not been listed.

Saturday and Sunday

WWE Crown Jewel (Netflix, Canada). Saturday 7 November at 12 p.m. ET, live from Riyadh, with Roman Reigns facing Sami Zayn for the Crown Jewel men’s championship and Liv Morgan meeting Chelsea Green for the women’s title. Netflix carries it in Canada; in the US it streams on ESPN+ instead.

City of God: The Fight Rages On, season two (HBO Max, US). HBO’s continuation of the 2002 film returns on Sunday 8 November with six episodes, weekly on Sundays, on HBO Latino and HBO Max. After the death of the drug lord Curió, a fight for control of the territory breaks out, and Matheus Nachtergaele, Alexandre Rodrigues and Roberta Rodrigues return. Its Canadian home for season two has not been announced.

Heart Eyes (Hulu, US). The 2025 film joins Hulu on Sunday, a late leftover from the spooky season for anyone who missed it in cinemas.
