Terry Moore

American actress

Terry Moore is an American actress, born Helen Luella Koford in Glendale, California, on 7 January 1929. She worked as a child performer from 1940, played the young Paula in Gaslight (1944), and took the stage name Terry after a 1948 role. Mighty Joe Young (1949) made her a leading lady, and Come Back, Little Sheba (1952) brought an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. A 20th Century-Fox contract followed, with leads through the 1950s and guest roles on television for decades after.

Terry Moore appears in 3 films in The Rerun, from 1949 to 1957. Most of that work is in drama, adventure and family.

Known for

  • Come Back, Little Sheba (1952). Earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
  • Mighty Joe Young (1949). The film that brought her widespread recognition.

Career

As Jill Young, the girl who raises a giant gorilla in Mighty Joe Young, she became a name; the film won the Oscar for visual effects. Her Oscar-nominated turn as Marie, the lodger who unsettles a fragile marriage in Come Back, Little Sheba, showed she could hold her own against heavyweight drama. Elia Kazan then cast her as the female lead in Man on a Tightrope (1953), and Fox signed her long term.

The Fox years brought Beneath the 12-Mile Reef (1953), one of the studio’s early CinemaScope releases, Daddy Long Legs (1955) opposite Fred Astaire, and Betty Anderson in Peyton Place (1957). Television took over from the 1960s, from a regular role on Empire to guest spots on Batman, Murder, She Wrote and True Detective. She received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1994.
